Very happy to have a forum closer to home. SACanada is so faraway. I am in Ireland for about seven years now. Before that 4 years in Austria. Also did a 12 months stunt in London. Also on my way to Canada in the future. I am available if there are any questions about Ireland.

Paisley: Hello from the Emerald Isle! Kilkenny, Ireland

Hey Rustig. I have a question - curiosity killed the cat, I know, but...
I know Ireland isn't called the "Emerald Isle" for good reason, because it's green. But in order for a place to be green, it has to be wet. And I guess that equates to rain. Lots of rain.
Does it rain quite a lot? Is the weather really as dull and dreary as many people and publications would like us to believe?
What would a high temperature on a hot summer's day be, and what would be considered as really cold?
I'm interested because I stay in the USA's North West, and believe me, we receive plenty of rain! But you get used to it. I think the reports of continuously bad weather in the UK and the surrounding islands have deterred many a Saffer to consider those places as to move to. Would it be possible to compare Ireland's weather conditions to a familiar place in SA?

Janneman - As an Irishman told me, Ireland is like a big sponge. It can rain for weeks non-stop. Yes it is green. 'n Karoo Skapie se idiee van hemel.
It can be very dreary and miserable. Irish always complain about the weather. It does not bother me as a person. Cannot really find a place in South Africa to compare. Highest summer temp is about 22 deg Celsius. Gets higher. Last summer it did not rain for three weeks. The lawns at the hotel I worked died. I thought it was amusing. They were considering water restrictions. Even with all the water in Ireland, the quality is very bad. Every now and than there is an outbreak of some weird disease. At least there is no water charges in Ireland.

22º Celsius - not what I would call "hot" at all. No wonder Guinness is so popular - indoor activities to while away the cold days... But I suppose one gets used to it. Die bloed raak dikker en net 'n ietsie onder die prop sal dit weer dun kry.

Janneman - Ek stem met jou oor die Skapie. Die arme ding sal 'n senuwee ineenstorting kry van al die gras. Ek vrek oor lams vleis.
