Hi guys...

I’m totally bummed out now...just did the Points System Calculator on the UK border agency website and I don't have enough points.... I'm working on my masters degree which will be done by the time I apply, I get an 18k salary per month, I'm 27 (ok, will by 28 by the time I apply), have done my previous degree in English so I've got proof that my English is sufficient, will have the 800pounds fund available by the time I apply..... Why don't I qualify??

Does this mean they won't even consider me or should I give it a go anyway? Is it really that hard to get into the UK? x 1000000

Ellie, unfortunately it is extremely hard now. The UK do not want people anymore as they can not provide jobs for their own. The best option is to find a company who is willing to sponsor you. They will employ a lawyer. But even then it is not guaranteed. You can give it a go. But yes. there will be no guarantees.

Ellie - Dedre is correct. Since the economic downturn the whole of Europe shut the doors. It is extremely tough to get into the UK, and even if you have enought points and allowed to move there, jobs are hard to come by. Friends of mine son lost his job and was asked to leave UK. Under no circumstances was he allowed to stay. He did manage to persuade them to allow him to stay, but he is not allowed to work or claim any benefits.

Even EU citizens do not move around anymore.
You can only try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The points system changed in March this year - previously you received points for a Bachelors degree- now it has to be a Masters.
So, don't be despondent, but you will need to be patient and wait until you have received the Masters Degree before you can apply.
DON'T apply before you have enough points. You WILL by law be turned down, and you won't be refunded your application fee.

In the meantime, you can get your other paperwork in order (you will need a letter from the university for your undergraduate degree, stating it was taught in English, for example).

Note that in addition to the application fee, you also need to have proof of sufficient funds to support yourself initially in the UK. There is no set amount, but you will have to provide bank statements showing ready access to funds (that you have had for a couple of months) of a couple of thousand pounds.
