For some time, the UK has been phasing out the HSMP globally, and replacing it (and its various other migrant schemes) with a simpler points based system. The HSMP is essentially replaced by the scheme: General Migrant: Tier 1. For South Africa, this became effective yesterday, 30 June. This means that you can no longer get the HSMP.

THE UK has, since yesterday (June 30), introduced the first of the five tiers making up its points-based system for issuing visas.

The first tier is relevant to all highly skilled workers, entrepreneurs and investors interested in going to the UK. These applicants will be awarded points for criteria such as qualifications, previous earnings, age and UK experience, and only those with enough points will be able to get a visa.

This system replaces the Highly Skilled Migrant programme. Other tiers still to be rolled out later this year include students, skilled workers with a job offer and temporary workers such as musicians, actors and sportsmen.

Those who already in the UK on the HSMP will have to migrate to the General Migrant Visa (if they are eligible) when their HSMP is up for renewal.
